Paci Free

No more this...
Or this...
Or even this..
We are now Paci FREE!!!

How did we do it?  It really just kinda happened.  I am tired of looking for and buying paci's.  Taft started to chew on the paci.  Like a dog with a rawhide toy.  He was getting nice big holes in them and then we would throw it away.  Finally he was down to one and I told him over and over again that once it was messed up or lost, that was all that he get.
We have slowly stopped using it all the time.  He has never been able to have it at school.  For the last 6 months or so, I have not let him have it in the car (unless we were on a long road trip).  I told him that people would see him and think that he was a baby.  Then we went to only having it to go to sleep.  Sometimes he would find it earlier and get it when we got home.   Then....
It was Friday, April 6th.  We were getting ready for bed and he wanted the paci.  When I picked it up, it was chewed almost in half.  I pulled the hanging part off and he screamed.  I told him that it could it could come of in his mouth during the night and make him choke.  He wanted the nub so I let him have it but it would not stay in his mouth.  The next night, he asked for it and I told him that it was gone.  He didn't cry.  He just said that he wanted it and I told him no and to go to sleep.  He has never mentioned it again.
Don't get me wrong, we are still on shaking ground.  I am pretty sure that if someone makes a mistake and even talks about a paci, he will have a major breakdown, and scream to get a new one.  But for right now, we are great.

  1. Yay! So excited for you....I remember when we had to take away the baba, it is never quite as bad as you expect. However we did have a crazy meltdown randomly like a month later, so I will be quiet now...lol.

  2. Congrats! I took the binky away from both my girls at about 12mo and only let them have it at bedtime. That lasted until about 20mo or so and then I took it away for good. With my oldest daughter I told her another little girl needed it and we were going to send it to her and put it in a box. She was fine and never asked again. My other daughter however still asks about the binky and will cry. We are about 2 months in and bedtime is just now starting to get easier. It sounds to me like you may have lucked out! Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

    1. I think that we did just luck out. Although - he will be 4 in a few months and I was afraid that he was to be in Kindergarten and still want to sleep with one.

  3. Wow I'm so worried about this with my 18 month old. I've pretty much completely phased it out except for bedtime. He knows if he wants it he has to be in bed and he doesn't want that so he willingly throws it down... I got so lucky with the bottle. He got sick right around 12 months and couldn't use it because he was so stuffed so we moved to cups and I got rid of them all with no problems at all.. I wonder when I should try to take it away from bedtime too?
